My intensive treatment model is a comprehensive, immersive experience tailored to each individual's needs. By removing clients from their daily environments and immersing them in a supportive, therapeutic setting, we create an optimal space for deep introspection, healing, and growth.
This intensive approach deepens the traditional therapy approach by being offered in a series of longer sessions. The intensive model frees the client from the distractions and obligations of daily life so that the client can focus wholeheartedly on the healing journey without the disruption of the opening and closing of weekly sessions.
Most traditional psychotherapy sessions spend, even if brief, moments addressing day-to-day struggles and concerns. In contrast, at this moment, those are less the priority, and the deep-rooted concern gets the full undivided attention. Intensives allow us to go deep, relax into the work, and access healing thoughtfully, meaningfully, and efficiently.
I believe combining IFS with EMDR is the most powerful way to heal. Research has shown the efficacy of EMDR intensive in reducing trauma symptoms effectively, and IFS has been shown to address the inner world that often keeps us stuck in maladaptive behaviors that are no longer protective.
Intensives: 3 to 6 hours of EMDR/IFS-focused sessions daily sessions.
Depending on the client's availability and tolerance for the treatment, session frequency varies between 2 to 5 (6-hour) days or between 4 to 10 half (3-hour) days.
Each treatment is client-centered, and together, we assess and determine what is right for you based on your needs, capacity, motivation, and resources.
During the consultation call and pre-initial session, I will estimate the time I expect our work together to take based on the information you provide.
Consultation Call:
During this call, we will discuss previous treatment, current symptoms, and appropriateness of the treatment for you.
Before the Sessions:
If you are currently seeking this, I assume it is because you want to lean into deep healing. It is essential that "your cup" is complete and that you acknowledge that this time will be draining and challenging for your system (body). Please ensure you are well nurtured, rested, and disconnected (to the best of your ability) from daily life. Bringing comfort items to sessions, like extra layers, favorite snacks or drinks, or any comforting or meaningful personal items, is welcomed and encouraged.
During the Sessions:
Sessions typically begin at 9 am and finish at 4 pm, with a one-hour lunch break. I encourage you to listen to your body and needs throughout our work together and take breaks as needed. We will be tuned to our body and needs, meaning being aware of our physical and emotional sensations and responding to them to promote our well-being. This could involve moving your body, having a snack, taking a moment to ground, or just sitting and breathing. It's often part of the healing process and a skill we will help you develop.
This intensive treatment is uniquely tailored to each participant, recognizing and addressing their needs and circumstances.
Post the Sessions:
Each person experiences these intensives differently, yet is is expected and normal to feel tired for a few days following these sessions.
As we work through clearing painful experiences from the nervous system, it takes energy for the body to re-adjust. Usually, this lasts only a day or two. Although clients also report feeling unburdened, lighter, and energized after sessions. Allow yourself to rest post sessions and maximize self-care and self-compassion post sessions.
Please reach us at general@teresaprotasio.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.
Intensives are powerful but certainly not for everyone. Some clients are better suited for an ongoing therapeutic relationship. These sessions are are not appropriate for those with:
If this describes you, I recommend seeking a therapist you can meet with regularly to focus on safety and stability. Single incident traumas, incidents with a clear beginning or end (e.g., car accident, medical emergency, birth trauma, assault, etc.), are well suited for these intensives.
If you have a history of complex trauma, including severe or chronic abuse or neglect, intensive work may feel overwhelming for your system and an ongoing therapeutic relationship may be a better fit. Others with a complex history may want to and feel ready to do focused and intensive work on reprocessing and releasing past trauma and stress. This is best done as a supplement to a long-term therapeutic relationship. Clients may need to have an established relationship with a primary therapist to be considered for intensive therapy.
Unfortunately, intensives are not currently covered by insurance.
The treatment cost depends on the sessions' hourly duration at a rate of $250 per hour.
A 25% deposit will be required to confirm your intensive appointment, and the remaining 75% will be paid on the first day of the intensive.
Yes, a lot of clients seek these services to complement their therapy.
Yes, at this time, intensives are offered in person in my office at 142 Commercial Street, C2. Boston Ma 02109.
